Rise to Power is an overhaul mod for Crusader Kings II. Rise to Power allows the player to start as an unlanded character in CK2. Players using the Rise to Power mod can play in many unique situations that would cause a regular game to end.
The martial society is suited to the character that is skilled in the techniques of the battlefield and one-on-one combat. It mainly provides boons to the character's martial attribute and personal combat.
The stewardship society is suited to the character that is skilled in the routines of business and counting coin. It mainly provides boons to the character's stewardship attribute and the national tax modifier.
Start off by selecting a character to play as, and feel free to use Ruler Designer DLC if you have it.
Go into games rules and pick the options what you like begin as, and other options as well.
Your adventure begins
Your Adventure Begins event should fire prompting you to select your difficulty, make your way through the prompts and select the options you wish to experience. If you do not wish to play as a lowborn selecting the last option will have no effect on your current status. Currently in RTP they’re three forms landless positions available characters. They are Bastard, Lowborn, and Noble. Each position has drawbacks and provide the player some unique challenges they must overcome to succeed. If you decide to play as a bastard or lowborn you should know that you don’t get to directly choose your heir since who wants spend time on peasant succession laws. But when your character does pass away a pop up event will happen and you will get the options to play as a random child of yours, random dynasty member, your liege, or you can game over yourself. As a noble you can pick your heir as you please.
Bastard: So you want to be the lowest of the low huh? Well get ready for a challenge because your not even worth the breath to type this for. A bastard is very limited on things even a lowborn can do. Firstly a bastard cannot buy house or learn to read ever, so any hope claiming nobility is out the window unless some poor noble family sees you with that high prestige and invites to adopt you in. Or if your the talented type you could raise some zealots or patriots and take your claim that way. But all else fails you always got the poor spouse you tricked into marrying you and help pave the way for your children to succeed. Again note that when you die you will get the pop up to play as random child of yours and a option to play a random member of your dynasty.
Lowborn: Ugh you picked a filthy peasant, go stand in the corner over there and try not to ruin anything while I explain your position. The moment you become a lowborn the chance for you learn how to read fires. (This happens every two years, until you can read.) With luck you will learn this ability to read and with 400 prestige you could claim you stake in some nobility and become a landless noble. However in the mean time peasant there are others things you can do as well. As a lowborn you will have the opportunity to buy a house and assortment items for the house at cost. These will increase your monthly income and prestige the more you invest into it. However if you decide to move you will only get a portion of the money back you invested. Because let’s be honest why would anyone want that dirty Home of yours. Also as lowborn you can form mercenary bands and holy orders.
Nobles: Good day you landless noble nobody. You may have a noble blood in your dynasty but you still don’t have rank to have my attention. But alas I will tell you have many options to rise above and become great. As noble you gain access to mansions and their upgrades, these too provide monthly income and prestige bonuses. Also if you decided to move you will only get a portion of the money spent on your humble dwelling. Nobles are able to form mercenary companies and holy orders just like lowborns. However unlike lowborns, nobles have the opportunity to purchase baronies under their liege. By doing so you become a baron under your liege and landless title is no more.
Verify your new status
Once you have progressed through all of the prompts, you may verify your new status as a low born by checking your Family Coat Of Arms. You should see a field of black, symbolizing the nothing from which you came.
On the key features of RTP is the for a player’s landless character having the ability to move freely around map. For a player to move, one must simple click on the holding’s crest and click move here. You can find this crest easily by going to holding building menu and clicking on the crest there as shown in example picture. Note that one must have to the gold to move and not be ill or under a reagent. Also a player must first move to a Duke or higher land before being able to move freely anywhere in that domain. The player may want to be wary of bandits when traveling then can be quiet...tricky.
So what is a landless character suppose to do when he can't to depend on the local taxes to fund their endeavors, well get a job of course. A unique feature of RTP is the ability to have jobs to gain wealth and prestige. Jobs come at random chances from different NPCs throughout your home area. There are four levels of jobs for each of the five attributes. Lowborn and below begin from Job LVL 1 while Nobles get to begin from Job LVL 2. It's also important to note the switch from Job LVL 1 to LVL 2 is not tied to attributes. Now the LVL 3+ jobs are tied to the LVL 2 chosen job (i.e. if you went down the martial route for Job LVL 2, you are only offered martial related jobs for LVL 3 and LVL 4). In order to get to LVL 3+ jobs you are required to either know how to read or to be a noble. Another factor that determines the pay amount are the attributes of the character and they determine your stipends. Levels of stipends range from Low -> Medium -> High -> Highest. So for example you have martial of 29 and you have the highest stipend you will get 1.16 gold monthly (29 martial x 0.04 highest stipend = 1.16 gold). The stipend tab will show you the current LVL of your stipend. An example of the stipend at the HIGHEST lvl as seen in picture below.
There is only one path to the ranks of the nobility from this unfortunate set of circumstances. Once the world has heard of your great exploits, a noble in your realm will offer you the opportunity to become a member of their noble house. You must have at least 500 prestige and then after some time the adoption event will fire and you can finally rid yourself of your status as a bastard.
If you are just a lowborn and not a bastard then you fare just slightly better at breaking through to the next social tier. In order to ascend, you first must know how to read. Attempting to learn to read is something your character will do automatically, and hopefully before you die you will learn.
Stake your claim
As a non-bastard lowborn a you have the ability to claim nobility status of your house, but in order to do so you must have a proven track record. Once you have 400 prestige the decision to Claim Nobility will be available in the intrigue menu. If you have the required prestige and you are a learned person (i.e you can read) then you may elevate your house to the nobility rank.
The first part in starting your own mercenary band is having the adventurer trait. Your character may gain this trait by participating in either your liege's wars or in foreign conflicts. There are random events that will fire that will count as progress towards gaining this trait, "Call to Arms", "Invasion", and "Great Holy War" (needs verification). Once, you have participated in 5 of these events you should gain the adventurer trait. Note: that if you are if you are attempting to gain this trait through the events, you should not accept requests from anyone to be appointed as a commander as this seems to reduce and potentially eliminate the chances of these event from firing.
For blood and glory
So you want a be the baddest Mercenary company around huh? Well if you have determination you may have a shot at being mercenary captain. Being a Landless noble or lowborn you need two things to form a mercenary company first is the adventurer trait and second is gold, 400 gold to be specific. If your landed baron or count the only way to become a mercenary is through the intrigue society at the 4th rank.
Now you how do I fill my ranks you ask? What about that money though you needed to start this company? Well that start up money allows a passive recruitment with a random chance of 25, 50, 75, or 100 troops once per year. Once you reach the 250 volunteers you will be able to receive Mercenary Contracts. Note however some contracts are more lucrative than others. Once you accept a contact those volunteers are gone and you need to go recruit again. Note you can hold accepting offers by clicking the not for hire button. You can also raise your volunteers for your own battles whenever you reach 250. Note that landless mercenary companies are capped at 500, barons at 1000, counts at 1500, and dukes at 2000.
IF you landed mercenary company things are similar yet different too. You still have to raise volunteers but you no longer have the option to move, so choose you first holding wisely. However you do get a nice button you called search for volunteers. This will recruit volunteers in all the holdings you control once every 2 years.
That is basics of Mercenary Companies now go and make some glorious profit.
In order to found your own Holy Order, you must first possess one of the above crusader traits for a particular religion. In order to gain a crusader trait you must do one of the following: 1) join an RtP crusader event 2) participate as a levy in 2 Holy Wars started by your liege 3) join the regular vanilla Great Holy War event.
Become a true defender of the faith
Are you tired of those infidels of that heretic religion? Well then it is time to raise your weapon for your religion and form a glorious Holy order for your religion. To do this as a landless character you need three things. First you need the your religions holy warrior trait (i.e crusader trait), 200 Gold and lastly 200 Piety. If your landed baron or count the only way to become a Holy Order is through the Learning society at the 4th rank.
How you how do I fill my ranks you ask? What about that money though you needed to start this Order? Well that start up money allows a passive recruitment with a random chance of 25, 50, 75, or 100 troops once per year. Once you reach the 250 volunteers you will be able to recieve Holy Contracts. Note however some contracts offer more Piety than others. Once you accept a contact those volunteers are gone and you need to go recuit again. Note you can hold accepting offers by clicking the not for hire button. You can also raise your volunteers for your own battles whenever you reach 250. Note that landless holy orders are capped at 500, barons at 1000, counts at 1500, and dukes at 2000 troops.
Once you have climbed the social ladder an achieved the rank of Noble you are now able to purchase an available holding. In order to purchase an available holding you must currently reside in a settlement inside same the province as the holding (see Move To A New Province). From your Liege's profile you can right click on the county title icon and the option to purchase a holding should be available. For any landless noble purchasing a holding it will cost 600 gold, for landless holy orders it's 500 gold, and for mercenary companies it's 700 gold.

A unique feature in the Rise To Power mod is the ability for navel battles to take place. In order for a battle to happen you need raised troops lead by the player embarked on ships that are out on the open waters. When an enemy group in ships comes into the same water tile a chance of a navel battle can happen. Once a single navel battle has happened you character recieves the Admiral trait. Naval Expert leadership trait that can be gained by chance in naval battles. You also have a chance to imprison characters after a naval battle

If you happen to be unfortunate and find yourself held captive in someone's dungeon, and you cannot ransom yourself from your bonds, then you still have a card in hand to play. However, this option isn't one to be taken lightly and is most certainly something you would play when your in back is against the wall. Once you are held prisoner the Escape From Prison intrigue decision will be available.
I'll be back
When you choose this route you will loose 200 Prestige , all of your titles, holdings, Wealth , and you will be affected by the Low Rank modifier. You forfeit everything to spare your life. Use this at the peril of your own honor.
